What is a pay-to-rank leaderboard, and why do people pay for a spot?
Pay-to-rank boards strip advertising back to its oldest, most honest form: whoever commits the most gets the most visible position, and the price is public. Here is how the mechanic actually works.
What is a pay-to-rank leaderboard?
It is a public list where position is decided purely by how much you have paid. You submit a link, you pay, and your entry sits above everyone who paid less. No editorial judgement, no ranking algorithm, no hidden auction.
Traditional ad auctions do something similar, but the mechanics are invisible. You never see the competing bids, the quality score, or why one advert beat another. A pay-to-rank board shows the whole ledger.
What does a listing actually buy?
- A visible position on a page people already visit and share.
- A direct outbound link, tagged so you can measure the traffic.
- Association with the other brands on the board.
- A conversation piece — the ranking itself is the marketing.
Why would anyone pay to be on a list?
Because attention is the scarce good, and this is one of the few places where you can buy it at a price you can verify against everyone else's. You know exactly what the position above you cost.
How does a sats-priced board differ?
btcbid.lol runs the same mechanic with satoshis as the unit and bitcoin as the rail: 21 slots, no expiry, and payments that settle with no processor in the middle.
